What's A Moving Pod And How Does It Make Moving Day Easier?
When home moving, it can be strange to watch the contents of your home—all those possessions you've spent a lifetime accumulating—being loaded into a moving truck and driven away. Moving everything all at once is a practical choice when only moving a short distance. For longer distances, you might find that a hybrid approach is going to better suit your needs.
Not Essential for Daily Use
In the days (or even weeks) ahead of your move, you'll begin to pack things away. It quickly becomes apparent that many (perhaps even most) of the individual items in your home aren't essential for daily use. Your actual moving day can be far less demanding if these non-essential items were sent ahead. The best way to accomplish this is with a moving pod.
Like a Shipping Container
A moving pod looks like a shipping container, and this is pretty much what it is, although it's intended for residential customers. Many full-service home movers provide moving pods, creating a kind of hybrid service—sending selected non-essential items to your new home ahead of your arrival. The traditional moving truck is still used, but you may only need a smaller truck, meaning loading and unloading it is far less challenging.
Loading and Unloading
Of course, a moving pod must still be loaded and unloaded, but the benefit is that you can (within reason) take your time. The pod will be delivered to your current home on a flatbed truck and unloaded in a position where its door is accessible (presumably on your driveway). The pod is weatherproof and lockable. Ideally, you'll arrange for it to be delivered in time to allow a few days to load it.
Traveling Ahead
Once those non-essential items are loaded and locked into the pod, it's collected. It now begins its journey to your new home, while you continue packing up your more essential items. The pod travels ahead of you and will be carefully deposited at your new home, in a location that won't obstruct the arrival of the moving truck. It's securely locked, so its contents are safe.
Over the Coming Days
The moving will be unloaded first, and then you even have an opportunity to catch your breath. Over the coming days (depending on the pod's collection date and time) you can empty out the pod, combining all your possessions in their new location.
A moving pod will incur an extra cost beyond the rental of the moving truck and its crew. But in terms of the ease and relaxed pace of moving it provides, this extra cost can be worth it.
