How To Avoid Injuries While Moving Your Furniture

Posted on

While it may seem easy to move your furniture on your own, it's possible that you end up suffering an injury because you do not know what you are doing. Here are some tips that will ensure that you move your furniture safely without causing damage to your body.

Know The Correct Technique To Lift

A common expression used when moving furniture is to lift with your knees and not with your back. Unfortunately, it is easy to forget this in the moment when you are feeling rushed to get your moving truck packed. It will help to wear a back brace when moving heavy items to prevent injuries. Not only is it a reminder that you shouldn't be lifting with your back, but it will help keep your back straight to prevent injuries.

Stop If You Feel Pain

If you are moving something that is heavy and it causes you to feel pain, that's a sign that you need to stop immediately. Pain is never a good thing and is not something that you should try to push through to get the job done. Your body is trying to tell you that something is wrong and you need to stop.

Wrap Sharp Objects

There are a lot of things that you move that can have sharp edges. Not only does this include the small things that go into boxes but also large pieces of furniture as well. You can use plastic wrap to cover the sharp edges of furniture so that they do not cause an injury to you or other people if they bump into them during the moving process.

Wear The Right Clothing

While you want to be comfortable during your moving day, it's important to wear clothing that is going to provide you with protection from injuries as well. Jeans are rugged and can provide you with protection from unexpected damage as items rub against your body. Closed-toe shoes are essential, with steel-toe boots being ideal in case something were to fall on your foot. Gloves will help protect your hands when moving heavy objects throughout the entire day as well.

Use The Right Equipment

Everything doesn't need to be moved by lifting it with your hands. Make sure to have forearm moving straps on hand so that you can lift up heavy objects with your forearms rather than your fingertips. It also helps to have appliance dollies that you can strap large items to if necessary.
